Just as important as the traditional dishes in Bavaria is the liquid component: Bavarian beer. This article is dedicated to the golden beer, a must-try when dining out for Bavarian food in Munich.

The first hour of the Purity Law
On 23 April 1516, one of the cornerstones of Bavarian identity was laid: On this day, Duke William IV and Louis X issued the Bavarian Purity LawFor over 500 years, German beer has been brewed according to the Purity Law. The regulation states: "(1) Only barley malt, hops, yeast, and water may be used to prepare bottom-fermented beer.". " The enactment of the oldest food law laid the foundation for the Bavarian beer tradition. For us Bavarians, beer is not just a beverage; it represents enjoyment, tradition, culture, and the local way of life. Beer was and remains a part of Bavarian culture, and this is also lived here at the Waldgasthof Buchenhain.
History of beer in Bavaria
The Hofbräu Beer originated in the Munich court, the house of the rulers. Importing beer proved too expensive in the long run, so Duke William V founded the Hofbräuhaus on September 27, 1589. However, serving beer was reserved for the Munich court. It wasn't until 1610 that innkeepers were officially permitted to serve beer to the common people. This, of course, met with great enthusiasm.
When Maximilian I ascended to the Bavarian throne in 1806, the Hofbräu beer became the “Royal Hofbräuhaus” and, due to a lack of space, moved to the heart of Munich, to the Platzl, where it still stands today and attracts numerous tourists from all over the world.
Closely linked to Munich's beer history is, of course, the world's largest folk festival, the Oktoberfest. On October 12, 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married, and to mark the occasion, his father hosted a huge celebration for around 40.000 visitors. This was the forerunner of today's Wiesn, which has been celebrated annually since then. Two years after the wedding, Hofbräu beer was also served at the popular festival on the Theresienwiese.
The (beery) story of the Waldgasthof
Despite numerous attempts by the then owners to establish a restaurant here in Buchenhain, permission to operate a summer pub was not granted until 1906. With the long-awaited license to serve beer in hand, the owner christened our establishment "Buchenhain." Since that day, and to this day, Buchenhain has been a place where people come together, drink, eat, laugh, and chat. And the beer in our beer garden and inn in southern Munich is also an important, sociable element.
Now for the most important historical date of this article: The traditional Munich Hofbräu beer has been served at the Waldgasthof Buchenhain since October 01.10.1958, 63. For XNUMX years now, many liters of this beer have flowed from the taps in our restaurant.
